2009 Season

Saturday 22nd November 2008: Whitehead Eagles v 18th Newtownabbey
Whitehead entertained Newtownabbey on Saturday looking to avenge their defeat 3 weeks ago. The match started well with both teams battling it out but it was Whitehead who drew first blood. A long ball into the Newtownabbey box from Andrew Nimick led the Newtownabbey defenders puzzled as they struggled to clear and the midfield dynamo David Lorimer took the chance well with a 15 yard strike. Newtownabbey were not coming to Whitehead to lose and constant pressure led to many near goals if it wasn't for the superb efforts of Stewart Cleland and Johnny Stitt in the centre of the defence the first half would have been a different story. With the wind behind him, Chris McIlwaine AKA 'weasel' hoofed a very long ball and a mix up between the Newtownabbey goal keeper and the right back led the "dangerman" Walid Nadjai to secure his first Whitehead goal since he signed in July this year after a record £3 signing from Carrick Rangers. The first half ended with Whitehead's spirits high, with a 2-0 cushion and home crowd they had nothing to lose. Alex Haggan replaced Walid Nadjai in the upfront position. Newtownabbey started the faster of the two teams and early in the second half after a goal mouth scramble the Newtownabbey striker poked it in from one yard. Once again Eagles did not start and suffered the consequences and the Newtownabbey centre midfielder hit a 25 yard screamer and once again Eagles were level. Fresh legs were brought on as Ruairi Hamilton was brought off for the more experienced David White. Disaster struck when McIlwaine failed to make full use of his catching abilities and suddenly eagles were on the back foot. Newtownabbey 3-2 Eagles. Kyle Champion replaced Edward Wilson on the right side of midfield and used his superb throwing abilities to great use. A Chris Hughes through ball led the veteran Alex Haggan to another superb goal. Newtownabbey 3-3 Eagles. Constant battling from the whitehead players led to a Kyle Champion shot which just skimmed the bar. In the dying moments a bit of magic from the maestro David Lorimer, he skinned 4 of the Newtownabbey players leaving them bewildered before wrong footing the keeper but eventually hitting it wide. Watch out Newtownabbey!!!
